Om Julie Behaegel

I work as a knitwear designer with a strong focus on materiality and the ongoing process between hands and mind. My practice is deeply rooted in the tactile qualities of yarn and technique, and I have also taught knitting in various educational settings in Belgium.

Education

After graduating as a master in Art History at the University of Ghent, I studied Textile Arts at SLAC (Leuven) and Textile Design at LUCA school of Arts (Ghent). I completed my studies with a specialized master in Knitting Design at Arba-Esa (Brussels).

Other professional qualifications

I’m a knitwear and textile designer with a background in art theory. Going back and forth between my hands and my mind, materials and thoughts, is key in how I work. The tactility of materials is an import factor in my artistic process that is always ongoing. I’m interested in the history of textiles, the social context around them and how this is evolving through time. Besides my own design practice, I've been working as a freelance knitwear designer for several fashion designers and companies in Denmark and Belgium.

Teaching experience

In Belgium I worked as a guest teacher in different primary schools and high schools.
